In it's present form, nondogDV is a partnership of 2 independent artists, Troy McLachlan and Clive Keep. In the past we have been involved a variety of creative projects and enterprises. Troy mostly music, TV and the visual arts. Clive in the visual arts and design - with a distinctly 3-dimensional bent.

What we have in common is that we have both always worked outside the mainstream - mostly freelance or self-employed - and aspired above all else to creative autonomy.

nondogDV was born late in 2001 due to a convergence of ideology and a synergy of talent. For Troy (camera, directing, script writing) it was a continuation of his dogged ambition to 'make films'. For Clive (post-production, writing, props) it was a natural extension to his work with computers involving website design and 3D animation (see nondog) and his interest in all varieties of creative endeavour.

We don't see our humble efforts as a way to one day 'be recognised' and get to make 'real movies'. We see limitations in technology and budget (which occur at every level anyway) as an essential part of the creative process. All that is required for legitimate artistic expression is an idea to communicate or a story to tell, a medium to communicate it and an audience to offer it up to.

The internet offers easy access to a diverse audience and we see it as our most promising arena. We plan to continue website development(see nondog) and music production(coming soon) as second and third strings to our bow.

Troy McLachlan (biography)

Camera operator/Director/Sound engineer

Troy McLachlan primarily comes from a sound background, having started in television as a sound operator with video film crews. Over the years he has worked as an advertising copywriter, a jingle writer and sound engineer for music projects.

Troy McLachlan worked a number of years with daily news crews for Television New Zealand and TV3. He has also been involved in making documentaries and current affairs items for diverse television networks such as NHK Japan, Channel Nine in Australia and French TV.

Working in daily news in New Zealand has given Troy a strong basis in making "rip, shit 'n' bust" video projects where clients need quick results at broadcast quality. He believes a news background gives him the ability to go out and get the pictures needed to finish a video project on time and under budget.

Clive Keep - post production

Clive Keep has been living and working in Hong Kong since 1988.  Having graduated from London University (UCL) in 1981 (BSc in Architecture), he has followed a project-based career path mostly working on a self-employed basis in the field of Art and Design.  He got the bug for computer-based art and design in 1996 when a friend gave him an ancient IBM PS2.

"I got into building my own computers, messing around with the internet and learning about how computers work and what they can do. At the time I was sourcing a project that involved creating and running a community art gallery and I realised that here was a way to supplement my meager income.

"I started to develop my computer skills in web-design and offer my services to other artists and freelancers. I was pleased to discover that computer technology had progressed to a level where it could at last offer a useful tool in the area of 3D design at a reasonable price. [Compared with my previous experience while I was doing my degree in 1980, wherein I was limited to producing wire-nets in perspective with something housed in a box the size of a wardrobe.]"

Since then Clive has dabbled in script-writing and programming and extended his skills in web design, 3D object modeling and logo design.  The latest string to be added to his bow is DV editing.

You can see various examples of his work on this site and the original nondog site
